Father Son Trip Ideas in Northeast Ohio
An Outdoor Escape at Mosquito Lake
Summertime at Mosquito Lake in Cortland, Ohio, offers some of the best fishing in the state. Dads can rent a boat from the Mosquito Lake Marina to catch some of the Lake's panfish, small and largemouth bass, and walleye. Outside of fishing, you can rent a pontoon boat for a cruise around the Lake or paddleboards and kayaks for a more leisurely time out on the water.
Hiking is another excellent way to explore Mosquito Lake, State Park. There are four trails within the park to conquer. Beaver Trail is a short .6-mile multi-use trail that is good for an easy hike or bike outing. However, the park favorite is Turkey Run Trail, a five-mile out-and-back jaunt that will deliver views of the Lake and a peaceful walk in the woods.
Pro-tip: Anglers over 16 will need a valid fishing license to fish in or on any of Ohio's waterways. You can purchase your fishing license at the Mosquito Lake Marina store or online here.
Experience a Big City Art Exhibition
For generations, fathers and sons have enjoyed connecting on camping trips and outdoor adventures with the Boy Scouts of America. Famous artist and illustrator Norman Rockwell may never have been a Boy Scout himself, but with his long history working with the Boy Scouts and Boys Life magazine, you can experience his Norman Rockwell American Scouting Collection Exhibit at the Medici Museum of Art in Warren, Ohio.
This stunning art installation captures not only the heart of America and the legacy of the Boy Scouts but also the talent of Norman Rockwell, which will keep you engaged as you take in these incredible paintings.
Eat Your Way Through the Italian Food Trail
No father-son weekend is complete without sharing a hearty meal. Trumbull County's Italian Food Trail delivers iconic Italian dishes for every appetite. Many of the Italian stops are run by third and fourth-generation families who continue to make the recipes just like Grandma used to. Even if you don't make it through the whole Trail, you can at least stop at some local favorites to experience a taste of Trumbull Counties Italian roots.
- Salvatore's Italian Grill is known for its pizzas, and they have perfected the family tradition; believe me, I've tried it.
- Buena Vista Cafe has all the Italian eats but notably serves Uncle Nick's Greek Fried Chicken; it's a must-order on your trip on the Trail.
- Cafe 422 has peppers in oil, a local creation that can only be found in Trumbull County.
Golfing in Trumbull County
Seventeen golf courses are all within a short distance of one another in Trumbull County. Your dynamic duo can spend their guy's weekend going from one course to the next. Whether they are teeing up to enjoy a short 9 nine holes or a premier premiere 18-hole course, there is something for every golfer, whether a novice or pro.
Pro-tip: When it comes to father-son trip ideas, cool off and get a brew afterward at Modern Methods, a local brewery in downtown Warren, and check out Dave Grohl Alley. Also coming soon in Downtown Warren is a new bourbon tasting room!
Guy's Getaway at Robins Theatre
Robins Theatre in Warren, Ohio is another excellent way to connect during your father-son trip. This 99-year-old building sat vacant for years before it was renovated in 2019. Now you can rock out to one of the many national and regional acts that are booked in this historic theatre and become a part of history as you are entertained. Find your favorite band or show here.
Pro-tip: Parking is nearby; however, you will need to walk from your parking spot to the theater.
For the Classic Car Lovers
It is not a guy's getaway without visiting the National Packard Museum in Warren. Housing a rotating display of both original and restored Packard automobiles, take your son to see America's first luxury cars' sleek lines and classic designs. With over one hundred years of ingenuity, you can even turn the clock back and explore the history of the Packard family itself with original documents, photographs, and artifacts.
Pro-tip: Another fantastic entertainment option nearby is the W.D. Packard Music Hall and Packard Park in Warren, Ohio's historic district.
